The Manseau chapter “Witches and Indians” and “Tituba’s Confession” shows how racial and gender biases play a role in how religion is understood in everyday roles.
THE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER FOR THIS DISCUSSION: What role does gender and/or race play in the everyday lives of both believers and their communities, and does the power of the religious authority of the church control behaviors of believers or even itself?
You will use Tituba as a colonial example and then the article about the Southern Baptist Churches and their problem with sexual predators, showing how authority “confirmed” by God without oversight allowed some men to abuse their authority. OR, if you’d prefer, you may find another recent article about women and male religious authority…which is fairly easy because women in various Christian denominations are still not allowed to be leaders, ordained pastors or priests, and in some cases, have no authority over their own lives and bodies. There are also articles about some churches who tell women to they should stay with domestically violent spouses as their “Christian” duty.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FINDING AN ARTICLE–FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT ONLY:
This is an ACADEMIC course so all articles must be from a national or international news source, like Al Jazeera, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, BBC, Reuters, Associated Press (AP), PBS, etc. Many major media sources have a “Religion” section, this is fine. (For example, while the Church of England may have a press outlet for followers, it is still likely that you can find that the BBC will run a story on the same issue or event.)
DO NOT USE! Any source that is from a particular religious site/church/etc. This includes any online source that is ONLY about religion, even if it claims to be unbiased. AVOID at all costs any “news site” or article that has an overly political agenda. What a politician has to say is not relevant to this question…we are simply looking at religion and gender for this assignment. Avoid opinion pieces or man on the street comments as well. If I wanted general public opinions I could just suggest you give your own HOWEVER this assignment is NOT looking for opinions. Avoid Op Ed pieces or blogs. These are opinion pieces, not news pieces.
